God speaks in the silence of the heart. Listening is the beginning of prayer.
Mother Teresa
Hearing from God and embracing the divine message of rest is essential. When we want a deeper connection with God, learning to slow down, quiet our minds, and listen to His voice is crucial. It is challenging to do this in a world that glorifies busyness and productivity. It takes an intentional heart and mind to slow down and rest in the spirit of God. In this blog post, we will explore how hearing from God and slowing down to do so can offer us a transformative power that changes not only us but also those around us. There are numerous benefits to incorporating this into your daily routine.
Hearing from God
(Quiet Time with God)
Many Christians desire to learn how to slow down and hear from God daily. Nevertheless, in today’s fast-paced society, the constant busyness of life can drown out the gentle whispers of the Holy Spirit. Taking quiet time with God allows for moments of stillness and connection with Him. We can then be more intentional about listening to what God is communicating to us. Remember the story in 1 Kings 19:11-12, where Elijah was waiting for God’s presence to be revealed? God was not in the wind (noise and movement). He was not in the earthquake or fire. It was in the quietness that He experienced God’s presence. It is in these times that we give our hearts space to open up and receive His Word and message. Many of us are taught not to waste time. We know that if we remain too still in our jobs, it’s not too long before we’re looking for another one. Within our families and communities, we get busy with the cares of life.
Surrendering Control to Divine Timing
The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.
Exodus 14:14
Learning to rest in God’s timing requires a surrender of our need for control and a trust in His perfect plan for our lives. Understanding how to rest in the spirit of God can bring an indescribable peace. It can bring clarity to our daily lives.

A Journey to Peace

There are intentional changes you can make to your daily routine that can support your journey to peace. Christians strive daily to improve their ability to implement these changes. Now, let’s explore some ways that can assist you on your journey. One of the changes involves practicing gratitude. Cultivating a heart of thankfulness can change your perspective. It helps you to open your eyes to the different ways that God is at work in your life. Have you noticed how much better people treat you when you show them gratitude? Why would you be grateful for people and not God? A Gratitude Journal can help you with this. Another change is to have a silent time built into your daily routine.
Embracing Stillness in a Busy World

I have found in my life that another crucial strategy or habit you need is to observe your “Sabbath Day.” It’s beneficial to do this every week, as God instructs us to in His Word. I have to be honest. There are weeks when I don’t have an actual “Sabbath Day” (a day of absolute rest). There was a time in my life when my daily routine was from 6 am to midnight. I thought that because I went to church on Sundays, I was truly observing the Sabbath Day. In respect of the way I was taught, I did observe it. At that time, my mom observed how busy I was. Wisely, she told me that it would be best if I took at least one day (outside of church) of rest. She let me know that I need to find time at least once a week to get away from everything and rest. She didn’t call it the Sabbath Day. She just knew that I needed to slow down and get some rest. After carefully considering her words, praying, and conducting some research, I realized that spiritual rest was just as important as physical rest. I had to be very intentional about changing things. Because of what I learned at that time, I now stop myself to make sure that I’m observing “Sabbath Days” the way that God intended me to. It’s truly a journey. Would you like to learn some strategies that can help you improve your quiet time with God (I call this time my personal devotion time)?
We can easily get so busy that we forget the purpose of doing what we do. When we make time to be quiet with God, He reveals our true purpose. He shows us how to settle our mind and spirit. Taking a day of rest, your Sabbath Day, is just as important today as it was in biblical times. God knew that we would need to reset. He knew we would need to rest and connect with Him. How can you change your routine to get more rest every week?
